Choosing the Right House Sitter

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

First of all, start searching for the right house sitter well in advance. It is a lot more difficult to find one with a schedule that exactly fits your schedule than you think. You need to make sure that they will be able to stay the entire time they are gone and that you are prepared for their stay. Before hiring, interview your candidates to learn about their skills and reputation and responsibility as a house sitter. Never hire someone you don’t trust or feel is irresponsible or unstable. Another important tip is to leave all instructions, rules, and guidelines in writing so that there is no chance that they will forget. Also, invite the sitter over the day before to confirm plans, give them any keys they might need, and important contact information including emergency numbers. Lastly, it is important to have a backup, because it is always a possibility that the house sitter will get sick or have to cancel last minute, or maybe just leave the house for a short amount of time.
